"Like many people, I have been a little nervous of what could be coming," organiser David Winkworth said.

"There are also the lessons from Tathra 18 months ago."

He said the meeting was attended by about 100 people from the Kalaru, Bournda Park Way and Wallagoot communities.

With Rural Fire Service Inspector Phil Paterson attending to provide information, Mr Winkworth said the aim was to educate the community about what people could go home and do straight away.

He said there were three main lessons taught by Inspector Paterson.

Firstly, if you are going to leave during a bushfire then go early, because if you go late when the air is filled with smoke and embers there will be traffic jams and you will find it difficult to see.

Also, have a storage box filled with important documents such as passports as well as spare clothes waiting beside the door ready to take with you.

Finally, be aware that houses burn from the inside and "you would be surprised of the gaps embers can enter through", Mr Winkworth said.

He said while the steps to prepare your home were all "pretty simple and pretty cheap", there were a few to be done to prepare as much as possible.

"But if you just do one job a week... then it's not that big a job," he said.

He also said it was important to work with your neighbours to come up with a group plan and it was important to support each other and to share resources such as long ladders.

"In my street in Kalaru there's bound to be people who would have difficulty in getting up and clearing their gutters," he said.

"If a fire comes through it may be a resident of your small group is away, so it's up to you to run up to their place and put some sprinklers on."

The meeting was held in Evans Park, Kalaru on the same weekend as the RFS's Get Ready Weekend, although it was a separate event.

Mr Winkworth said due to the interest in it he would be starting up a bushfire newsletter with tips and ideas of how to get ready for the bushfire season, which will be left in Kalaru Koffee on Tathra Rd, Kalaru.

The next meeting will most likely take place in November; keep an eye on the BDN, listen to ABC South East or check the newsletter to confirm its date and location later this year.
