More than 300 firearms were confiscated from a home in North Cooma on Tuesday, September 3, in an operation which began mid-morning.
In a planned operation, NSW Police and NSW Fire and Rescue Hazmat crews are removing the cache from an elderly man's garage.
Police said they were investigating "a potential breach of the firearms Act".
"A substantial number of firearms have been seized in relation to potential breaches to the firearms Act," a spokeswoman said.
"Police inquiries are continuing."
She confirmed the investigation concerned a "licensed firearms dealer".
Firefighters soaked some weapons in chlorine to protect themselves from inhaling mould.
"We are decontaminating the butt and the stocks because they had microorganisms on them," a Fire and Rescue spokesman said.
He said guns in various conditions, including shotguns and bolt action guns, were found. Some had been there for perhaps 20 years.
"There was a variety of guns in a large safe located in a garage," the spokesman said.
The spokesman said the weapons were of an older type, "which people collect".
"It didn't look like they were in a working condition," he said.
The spokesman understood the man was almost 80 years old.
