Students from Bega High School are preparing for the trip of a lifetime to Cambodia and Vietnam, and are planning a music night fundraiser that will help support community projects in the two countries.
The eight Year 10 and two Year 9 students will leave on September 27 for the 17-day trip, including a visit to Cambodia's infamous Killing Fields on their first day.
"It will give us a perspective on what happened to the Cambodian people," student Ella Burke said.
"We're going there so we can understand what people went through, so we can be respectful knowing what they've been through," student Gemma Smith said.
She and the other participating students were excited to learn about new cultures, languages, as well as visit the UNESCO world heritage site Angkor Wat.
They will also have four days in Vietnam's Hoi An, which has an ancient town that is also an UNESCO world heritage site.
Bega High's now annual trip to South East Asia is what many students look forward to in their schooling.
"I've wanted to go since I heard about it when I was in Year 7," Gemma said.
But it is not all about sightseeing, as the students will also be joining in community projects as well.
"It's helping communities there too, it's not purely tourism," student Kataya McCormack said.
Money raised from their fundraising will be going towards this purpose.
The students are hosting a music fundraiser on Saturday, August 31 at the Bega Country Club, Bega.
Come along and enjoy a night of acoustic music from past and present students of Bega High, along with a few additional supporters.
There will be Cambodian (Khmer) and Vietnamese food prepared by Jo Riley-Fitzer and attendees will be waited on by participating students.
Tickets are $25, which includes the meal and a lucky door prize.
There will be the popular annual dessert auction, raffles, information on the trip, and all funds raised will go towards community projects in both Cambodia and Vietnam.
