A spokesman said the "bread and butter" species had gone quiet, but in areas like Tura Beach and off the Tura Headland, the opposite was in effect with good-sized ocean flathead on the chew in those areas.

Try blue coloured soft plastics for the big ones! Anglers report acres of dolphins cavorting in the same area apparently feeding on large schools of whitebait.

Anglers heading out this week are reminded to check their safety gear with some cold and sometimes foggy mornings anticipated.

Swells are also increasing later in the week so rock fishers and those out on the water are encouraged to check conditions before heading out.

The northerly migration of Australian salmon has come to a halt with the drop in temperature and from now to late October we will have sizeable schools clustered about local headlands and beaches. They will also be moving in and out of the inlets for a few days either side of the full moon. Try trolling the lower reaches of the Pambula River and Broadwater with green coloured metal spinners.

Local reef fish will adjust to the low temperatures and are expected to return to the bite about the local reefs. Try White Rock, Long Point, Haycock and Horseshoe reefs. Best results from anchoring and using a bottom berley bomb.

The beginning of the run-in from the sea remains good for yellowfin bream and trevally, particularly over the shallows in the Merimbula Lake. Nippers without a sinker or soft plastics will get results. In the closed Bega River good bream and trevally are congregating at Mogareeka and there are some beautiful estuary perch further up river. Try fishing timber structures with vibes.
