Material is being stolen from stockpile sites around the shire, and Bega Valley Shire Council is seeking the community's assistance in stopping the thefts.

On its social media page a council spokesperson said there are a number of unsecured road stone stockpile sites where material has been left in place for immediate use or to save on double handling back to a secure depot.
Also, excess fill material and wood chippings from vegetation maintenance activities can often be stored on the roadsides until it is either reused or it can be appropriately disposed of.
"Unfortunately, material often gets taken by members of the public for personal use in amounts ranging from the odd bucket full to large trailers being loaded by tractors," the council spokesperson said.
"Not only is this illegal and the theft of ratepayer-funded assets unless appropriate permissions have been given, it can be very dangerous working on busy roadsides."
All the stockpile sites are on council land and the majority have signposts stating that is the case.
The spokesperson said while some signs have gone missing, these would be replaced in the coming months.
"We are asking for the community's assistance in identifying individuals and vehicles involved in the removal of material from stockpile sites located around the shire and urge anybody who witnesses any suspicious activity to report it to the customer service team on 6499 2222," they said.
From there the appropriate action will be taken, which may include involving the police, they said.
