From Reel Gem nearby, captained by Glenn Pollock, our star angler Heather Sutterby landed a 64.5kg bluefin, just 0.5kg heavier that her Merimbula Open prize winning 64kg yellowfin.
Martin Bartlett landed a 45kg bluefin and Ron Vanderdrift one of 40kg. Good to see Ron enjoying himself while waiting for TackleWorld to reopen! Congratulations to all! Closer to home there are reports now of yellowfin tuna sighted from the Tathra wharf.
Bottom bouncers are continuing to report good flathead off Baronda Headland and northwards to Bithry's. Best depth remains 15-17 fathoms. Flathead are also active off White Rock and Kianinny. Try also off Tura Headland and Bournda Island.
The best snapper and morwong are coming from the gravelly areas beside the main reefs. Try White Rock, Long Point, Haycock and Horseshoe reefs as well as Lennards and of course North Head and the Boyd's Tower reef out of Eden. Try anchoring and using a berley bomb set near the bottom. Chinamen leatherjackets remain a problem northwards especially about White Rock, best to just move to another spot.
Anglers report excellent drummer on the bite off our headlands using cunjevoi as bait. Cabbage weed is also good for both drummer and luderick. Some excellent garfish have been brought onto the bite in the bay just outside the Merimbula bar and also in Kianniny bay, try off the jetty.
There are patches of good salmon schooling off the beaches. Try Tura, Main and Haycock Beaches as well as Tura and Short Point Headlands. Salmon are attracted to gang hooked pilchards and surf poppers. Spinning can also bring good rewards. Best time is early morning or at dusk when good size tailor come onto the bite.
In the Merimbula front lake the run-in from the sea is good for trevally and bream over the shallows. Nippers without a sinker or soft plastics will get results. Reports from the Bega River, which remains closed, include some large bream taken near the wall at Mogareeka using small black crabs as bait. Trevally and dusky flathead remain on the chew in this area on the sea side of the bridge. At Pambula bream and tailor remain on the bite.
The club's next event is the popular social: Salmon Sunday to be held at Haycock Beach this coming Sunday, July 14.
