Lot Stafford All-Abilities Playground was opened to a massive crowd of Tathra locals and families from across the shire.
A barbecue and face painting kept the large crowd occupied awaiting the official speeches and ribbon cutting. Mayor Kristy McBain said it was the largest crowd she had seen at any opening she'd officiated, while Bega MP Andrew Constance said he would make the shortest speech of his career so as not to keep the kids waiting any longer.
It was a scene reminiscent of Boxing Day sales when the ribbon was cut and a mass of children swarmed into the brand-new playground for both the lolly scramble and to enjoy the new equipment.
A double flying-fox, mini trampolines, roundabout, climbing frames and swings for children of all abilities make up the new play area thanks to a state government grant to the tune of $600,000.
Construction and landscaping was completed by Bega Bobcats, who were congratulated and thanked for their efforts at Saturday's launch event, which also involved NSW Commissioner for Open Space and Parklands Fiona Morrison as a special guest.
The playground is turning the Tathra foreshore area into a wonderful and inclusive family precinct, linking the skate park and grassy picnic areas to the outdoor gym and surf club via the new play space.
Cr McBain said similar playgrounds are destined for Bermagui and Eden in the short-term also thanks to government pledges at both state and federal level.

If there was to be any criticism it was from several voices around the park on Saturday that questioned why Bega Park couldn't see the same level of investment and facilities.
That aside, the joy and excitement on the faces of children across the weekend exploring their new play equipment was glorious.
