Deep drop anglers fishing the waters beyond the edge of the continental shelf are bringing up more than expected with a run of broadbill swordfish off Merimbula. Congratulations to Members Stewart Jeffrey, for a magnificent 118kg fish taken last Saturday and Clinton Bush who, fishing alone, caught and boated a beautiful fish last Sunday which weighed in at 87.5kg. This is great news for the forthcoming Merimbula Open scheduled for June 7-10 with some $15,000 of cash and goods on offer.

Water temperatures have dropped a degree or two and now rest at 17-18 degrees. This appears to have slowed down our local flathead and catches are not as good as a week or so past. Try at 15-17 fathoms off Tura Golf Course and Baronda Headland. Catches of snapper and morwong from our local reefs including White Rock, Long Point, Haycock, Lennards Island and Mowarry Point continue. Some nice gummy shark lie off the reef edges and have really fired up during the full moon. Anglers are having a difficult time with chinamen leatherjackets. Best advice is to move away.
Off the beaches salmon are also slow but some good bream are reported from the gutters at north Tura Beach near the headland. At the Merimbula Fishing platform calamari squid have become scarce until after dark.
In the estuaries water temperatures are starting to cool and are now below 19 degrees, however good fish remain on the chew including large tailor, trevally and bream near Fishpen. Near the Merimbula bridge there are also lots of luderick. The luderick are best caught with green weed as bait or artificial weed flys made with fine plastic. In the main lake there are some fine dusky flathead as well as trevally, bream and even snapper.
The Bega River remains open and good dusky flathead, trevally and bream are to be found about the Mogareeka Bridge.
The annual Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club's Snapper Classic sponsored by Tackleworld and Goodyear has a prize pool for the longest snapper of greater than $2000 in cash and vouchers plus many other prizes including the longest cumulative bag of five snapper. The Classic will be run over the weekend of May 25-26, with entries and briefing on Friday evening, May 24.
The clubhouse in Spencer Park will be open from 6.30pm on Friday, May 24. Visitors are very welcome.
