Game fishing off Merimbula has continued its great run with striped marlin the main focus for tag and release angling. With some early sightings there is growing interest in the coming tuna season. Kingfish remain patchy although some have cruised the Merimbula Wharf and they are active about Eden.

Catches of snapper and morwong from our local reefs including Long Point, Haycock, Lennards Island and Mowarry Point continue. Returns are not helped by an influx of pike and couta plus annoying chinamen leatherjackets. Some nice gummy shark lie off the reef edges.
Ocean flathead remain on the chew at the usual spots off Tura Golf Course, Tura Headland, Bournda Island, White Rock, Kianinny and Baronda Headland, however returns can be low due to the chinamen jackets. Try at 15 fathoms off Tura Golf Course and Baronda.
It's a good time for beach fishing when the south-west winds set in. For salmon try the gutters near Bournda Island also Tura Headland and Short Point as well as Haycock and Aslings beaches. Good returns can come using three-ganged hooks presenting a whole pilchard. After dark remember to use a wire trace as there are some large tailor on the prowl.
At the Merimbula Fishing platform there have been some great evenings for calamari squid. There is also plenty of bait fish, mainly yellowtail, and the occasional Kingfish.
Good fish remain on the chew in our estuaries including luderick in Pambula Lake on nippers. Water temperatures remain mild. In Merimbula Lake channel near the bridge there are also lots of luderick. In the lake there are some fine dusky flathead as well as trevally, bream and even snapper.
At Wallagoot good snapper are really on the bite when fired up on bait fish, mostly beneath tailor burst ups. Salmon, dusky flathead and trevally are also available. Best results when the weather is calm and the bait fish are out in the lake proper.
With catering provided by South Pambula's "A Pinch Of Yum", the Club's annual Seafood Dinner held at the Clubhouse in Spencer Park last Saturday, May 4, was very successful and members and their guests are looking forward to next year's event. Bookings will remain set at 70 persons.
The annual Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club's Snapper Classic, sponsored by Tackleworld and Goodyear, has a prize pool for the longest snapper of greater than $2000 in cash and vouchers plus many other prizes. The Classic will be run over the weekend of May 25-26, with briefing on the evening of May 24.
The clubhouse in Spencer Park will be open from 6.30pm on Friday, May 10.
