Katie Taylor was quick to follow up on a loose ball pushed out by the Merimbula keeper, racing in to score the team's first goal from close range, part-way through the first half.
Later, Katie Ryan scored a fine long-range goal to double the tally to 2-0, giving Tathra a comfortable lead over an understrength Merimbula team. In the second half, Sarah Eastman and Poppy Collins both came close to adding to the score, while the defence held solid to prevent Merimbula from scoring. The centre-back pair of Meghan Bennett and Isabel Bellicanta proved their reliability in clearing the ball away time after time. Officials said the win was a great morale boost and the team was now eager to face Merimbula again this weekend.
In first grade, United started well with Ben Deighan scoring an early goal with a first time volley into the top corner. Bega soon equalised, but Tathra won a penalty that Steve Slack scored from to give Tathra a 2-1 lead at half-time. In the second half, Bega equalised again and then the game became an end-to-end contest before Tathra faded allowing Bega to score twice late on to make the final score 4-2.
Earlier, the Tathra reserves had taken on Merimbula in Wolumla where officials said the first half was Tathra's best showing to date this season.
Unfortunately, a defensive error led to a Merimbula goal shortly before half-time. In the second half, lacking in energy and substitutes, Tathra conceded several times finishing with a 5-0 score-line. The seniors had byes over the weekend.
