Offshore, striped marlin remain the main focus for tag and release angling with interest in the coming tuna season sparked by some early sightings.

Bottom bouncers report great sand flathead catches along the coast, with Tura Headland near Merimbula, Turingal Point south of Kianinny and Baronda Headland to the north the most productive at 15-17 fathoms. Chinamen leatherjackets however remain a problem over both sand and reef together with small cuta and also green oceanic toads which love plastics and jigs.
Some large slimy mackerel have been taken from the Merimbula Wharf after dark but overall seem to have left our inshore areas. Pike are not uncommon at dusk. Some fine kingfish have cruised the wharf and landings reported. The Kingfish are resisting live bait in preference to squid. Just after dark is also the best time for some really nice calamari. Salmon are active off Tura Beach, Haycock and Aslings Beachs.
Snapper have fired up with good catches reported from Long Point, Haycock, Lennards Island, North Head and south to Boyds Tower Reef, Mowarry and Bitangabee. Good morwong are about in the same areas. Try 17 fathoms with pilchards.
Notwithstanding the recent fish kill, large chopper tailor with snapper beneath are available at Wallagoot Lake when fired up on bait fish schools. Salmon, dusky flathead and trevally are also available. At Wallagoot the annual four-month commercial netting season commences on May 1.
In the Merimbula channel, best results are at the change of tide for flathead and trevally with good bream closer to the oyster leases. A few snapper are also available in Merimbula Lake. At Pambula Lake good tailor, mullet, trevally, dusky flathead and salmon are about. At Mogareeka trevally, dusky flathead, bream and whiting as well as pan sized snapper are available. Try drifting near the bridge with live nippers.
The club's next event is its annual seafood dinner to be held at the clubhouse in Spencer Park 6.30pm for 7pm on Saturday, May 4. Bookings limited to 70 remain open on the club's website.
The club's annual Snapper Classic has been postponed one week to May 25-26 to miss the federal election.
