In Bermagui RSL club president Neville Staehr's speech at the dawn service, he commented on how Anzacs had endured "unspeakable conditions" during the Gallipolli campaign, but had still remained resilient.
The campaign was when our new nation was "tested and defined", he said, and April 25 had now become "our most sacred day".
"They were men and women of their time," he said.
"Like us, they dreamed of something better. They loved and were loved in return.
"They were prepared to fight for their beliefs."
As they endured the horrors of war, Mr Staehr questioned what they must have felt when they returned home.
"Loss and lifelong mateships had left its incredible mark on them and their country," he said.
Following the service, many people attended the Bermagui Country Club where a traditional gunfire breakfast was held.
