In those first weeks when shock and disbelief are overpowering, family and friends are our greatest support, rallying to help make difficult decisions and lighten the load.
When the initial shock subsides the immediate family can be left with a numbness and loss so intense that it hurts to breath.
Some families seek professional guidance at this point, while others may chose to close ranks and try to ride out the highs and lows of everyday life leaning on each other.
However, there may be times when they have exhausted all avenues of survival and just need a kind and thoughtful ear and a calm and peaceful place to seek support.
Compassionate Friends is a worldwide non-denominational charitable organisation formed by parents who have endured the greatest loss of all, and a chapter is available on the Far South Coast.
Among fellow parents, siblings and grandparents, Compassionate Friends offers a secure haven to enable people to share their loss and experiences and to talk about their child in a safe, secure and non-judgemental environment.
If you or anyone you know is struggling through such a sad event and could do with a little support, contact Janice on 02 6492 1359 or Sue on 0429 921 460.
The Bega Chapter of Compassionate Friends will hold a special annual meeting at the Red Cross Rooms in Church St, Bega, on Monday April 8, at 7pm.
Only those who have experienced the death of a child, grandchild or sibling are eligible to attend.
