Bega MP and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, told the Bay Post/Moruya Examiner and Bega District News Allianz Stadium would be knocked down and rebuilt, and ANZ Stadium would be refurbished.
"The aim is to bring fans closer to the actual sporting event at ANZ," he said. "People love their footy, and Allianz Stadium is not fit for purpose in terms of today's needs.
"From a security perspective, safety perspective, and amenities perspective, it just needed to be upgraded.
"There were only 48 women's toilets in the entire stadium, and that's nowhere near enough."
Mr Constance said criticism from the Labor party about the expenditure was misguided.
"The stadiums are only two per cent of our overall infrastructure spend, so to suggest we're not building hospitals and schools is not right," he said.
"When you build more than 200 schools and hospitals combined across the state, people notice."
Mr Constance claimed the Coalition's planned spending on the Sydney Stadium's was only $400 million more than Labor's, and said the potential rewards from a brand-new stadium outweighed the risks.
"There's always a risk when you take older infrastructure like that and refurbish it," Mr Constance said. "We thought it would be better to spend extra money to knock it down and build a modern-day stadium like Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
"We've seen both South Australia and Western Australia go ahead leaps and bounds on the back of their new stadiums.
"There's a lot of people in the bush who enjoy coming to the city to watch the footy, and we want to add jobs and opportunities on the back of this investment."
