We need extra staff at Merimbula because it takes away from what's needed at Bega.
- Police Association's southern region organiser Ben Buffett
The Police Association of NSW says security upgrades are needed at Merimbula, which currently has no CCTV protection at the front of the station and no outside lighting.
"It's great the government has made the announcement of the new station, but we hope that whatever party gets in follows through," the union's southern region organiser, Ben Buffett, said.
"The new station has been well received by our members who work there. In this day and age we need a purpose built facility. It's an old building and they need a purpose built facility.
"Bega is crucial given only one officer works there.
"They could certainly replace the Tathra demountable station."
Mr Buffett said on average police stations across the state are 70-years-old.
Premier Glady Berejiklian promised the new station's construction while alongside Police Minister Troy Grant in February, ahead of the March 23 state election.
“NSW has some of the lowest crime rates in 20 years and we want to do everything we can to help our men and women in blue to make our streets even safer," Ms Berejiklian said.
Bega MP Andrew Constance said the current station is "well past its use by date" and that he is "sure a new station will be welcomed by local officers".
Mr Buffett said the location of the new station is unknown, and said a "level of consultation with the staff" will need to take place first.
He also welcomed the promised by both the Coalition and the Labor Party of 1500 extra police officers after the election.
"We need extra staff at Merimbula because it takes away from what's needed at Bega," Mr Buffett said.
"Ultimately the commissioner makes the decision about where they will go, but consultation on a local level is always a good thing."
Country Labor candidate for Bega Leanne Atkinson said after consultation with the association, it was found 53 extra officers are needed in the South Coast Police District.
"We were told by stakeholders the highest priority for them is greater numbers of police," Ms Atkinson said.
"Officers are stretched, so it's our view greater numbers, response times and the safety and well-being of police who need our support are the priority."
