With the inaugural Merimbula Billfish tournament just two weeks away, on March 22-24, it is really exciting to get reports that marlin have moved north from Eden waters to lie just off Merimbula. Try the first drop off. Briefing for the Billfish Tournament will be at the clubhouse on Thursday evening, March 21, starting at 6.30pm.

This is a new venture by MBGLAC designed to be run during the best part of the gamefish season and a large entry list is anticipated. Enquiries Peter Haar 0417 021 066.
Reports that ocean flathead are really on the chew abound and some very large fish are being landed. Don’t forget the bag limit is 10. Try any of the normal marks from Long Point all the way north to Bithrys! Also try the marks off the lookout in Quarantine Bay at Eden. There are good tiger flathead in deeper waters, try Greencape at 20 fathoms.
Snapper remain at Hunter Reef, Haycock and Horseshoe Reef. Try also Lennards Island and North Head. Beach salmon remain sporadic; best spots Aslings and Haycock beaches.
Frigate mackerel are circling the Tathra Wharf together with “rat” kingfish (undersized below 65cm length). Some kingfish are reported at the Merimbula Wharf with some salmon and tailor moving around. Luderick remain on the chew at Merimbula, best time the hour before dark. Plastic lures are now used by most anglers.
There are trevally, bream and luderick about the oyster racks in Merimbula Lake. Kingfish in Merimbula Lake near the entrance channel are giving anglers some real excitement, look for bird activity and try spinning hard body lures. Dusky flathead, flounder, bream, trevally, mullet and some garfish are available in the Merimbula channel.
At Pambula Lake good tailor, trevally, some salmon and mullet are on the chew. Dusky flathead, big bream and whiting are all available at Mogareeka in the Bega River.
Interested peoples are invited to achieve a short range operator certificate of proficiency (SROCP) in a single half-day course. The club is sponsoring a tutor for the course to be held on Sunday, March 17, from 12 noon. For further information contact Martin Bartlett on 0418 331 242.
