It's a full weekend of Rugby 7s actions with junior players, boys and girls, aged 13-18 taking part. Tathra-based Far South Coast Falcons girls' teams will be showing off the speed and skill that makes them two of the most challenging teams in all the competitions they enter.
This year the Falcons have recruited boys too, just for this and the following Rugby 7s gala days in Canberra. Falcons players come from Bega, Tathra, Narooma, Pambula, Cooma and beyond.
Ladies open the weekend with play from 11am on Saturday at the Tathra Beach Country Club. The boys kick off at 11am on Sunday, with play to wrap up about 5pm both days.
"It's one of the few times the Falcons get to play on hometurf and we are really hoping the locals come to support our club," Falcons secretary Kate Howarth said.
"Our girls have done the hard yards, thousands of kilometres of travel and hours of training, all for the love of rugby and I know they'd love to show off their passion to their friends and families.
"Being able to let the boys have a run at home is great too, as there is no local competition for them to strut their Rugby skills," she said.
Ms Howarth said rugby union was an undeniably tough sport, but it was also a nurturing and family oriented environment. She said players could make friends for life and gain opportunities to play worldwide.
To participate in the ACT and Southern girls rugby 10s the Falcons are required to have a co-homeground and have built a partnership with the Cooma Rugby Union club resulting in the birth of the 'Red Falcons' meaning that Rugby Union is now available to girls across a larger section of our region.
Adding to the excitement, Brumbies staff will be in Tathra on Friday afternoon running trials to select just a handful of girls who will become part of the very first Far South Coast Rugby Academy.
This has been in the pipeline for quite some time and the Brumbies will be facilitating this program in order to unearth girls aged 14 – 18 who’re deemed to have potential to transition into the Brumbies pathway, Australian Youth and AON Rugby 7’s squads.
Any girl from any sport is welcome to try out, some of the world's best Rugby players have come from a different sport altogether. For more information contact rugby development officer Lachlan Creighton 0407 720 386.
