Assistant Minister for Skills Adam Marshall joined Bega MP and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance for the official opening of the new $7million TAFE NSW regional Connected Learning Centre on Wednesday, February 13.

The centre is the ninth of thirteen across the state to be opened to the public, and Mr Marshall said an $18million trade training centre will begin construction in the next six months.

Mr Marshall said he hoped the centre will help prepare the public for transitioning regional economies, and he has received interest from other states on the concept.

Mr Constance said recent "cynicism" towards the development is unfounded due to the fact 76 student enrollments had already been received, and said no decision has yet been made on the future of the Barrack St campus.

"I'm sick of the scare campaign of these people who think they've got some kind of purview over TAFE," Mr Constance said.

"It's not the realm of the socialists, it's actually our community's facility. There's hectares and hectares of unused land there which we could unlock and invest into the TAFE needs of our students today.

Mr Marshall said the move will help vocational training keep up to speed with technologies being embraced by universities and high schools.

The centre will have a technology focus to teaching, using augmented reality, simulations and virtual reality and is currently connected to an internet speed of 20mb/s, the same speed as the Barrack St campus.

"This facility is fully flexible, we can adapt," Mr Marshall said.

"This is just the beginning."

He said the addition of new courses means local residents will now have access to "training opportunities closer to home", with some able to run remotely even with just one student enrolled.

Site manager during construction, which finished a week ahead of schedule, Daniel McAlister said of the five centres he has overseen the Bega site is the best due to its close proximity to the centre of town.
