Tag and release reports show striped marlin are now running off Merimbula and Eden. Try the first drop-off. Game anglers get best results when they can circle bait balls with lures and switch to fish bait when marlin are spotted. There are also a few large mako sharks prowling the area. First to the Eden FAD are usually rewarded with fine dolphin fish (mahi mahi).

Nathan Brown, skipper of charter boat Headhunter (Bermagui), is our club’s guest speaker for the third Game Fishing Workshop this Wednesday evening, February 13, from 6.30pm. In preparation for the Club’s Billfish Tournament on March 22-24, Nathan will be delving into techniques for chasing down game fish with a focus on marlin. This workshop is free and visitors are welcome.
At the regular grounds ocean flathead are on the chew but remain in small patches. You may need to do some long drifts to find and mark a patch of feeding flathead but when found they are quite voracious and multiple hook-ups are possible. There are good fish off the lookout at Eden, try striped tuna bait. Tura Golf Course, Tura Headland, Bournda Island and north of Kianinny are good spots to try.
Snapper and morwong are biting along the main reef areas; Long Point, Haycock, Horshoe Reef, Lennards Island and North Head. Try anchoring and use berley. Thumper whiting are reported off Main Beach Merimbula opposite Fishpen. Best results from beach worms. Some fine salmon have been landed at Haycock Beach. Both pilchards and silver spinners are working.
Good calamari squid are being landed at both Tathra and Merimbula Wharfs with luderick remaining on the chew at Merimbula, try using plastic lures. The best times are morning and evening. Good luderick are also ravenous off our headlands. There are trevally, bream and luderick about the oyster racks in Merimbula Lake. Dusky flathead, flounder and mullet are available in the Merimbula channel and tailor are schooling in the main lake, soft plastics and small hard body lures will bring great returns for flathead and bream, silver spinners for the tailor.
Good whiting are schooling over the sand flats just up river from the Merimbula Bridge, try Sugapen lures. Good tailor, trevally and mullet are also prolific at Pambula Lake. Following recent rains the Bega River and the Merimbula Back Lake have both been opened by council and are now fishing well. Try Mogareeka for bream.
This coming Friday, February 15, the club will be hosting Merimbula Marine Rescue and will present its $2500 cheque from the Gala Monster Fish Auction.
