The eighteen-year-old was one of four chosen by national selectors to represent Australia in the annual Larsens Showjumping Championships, taking place in Gisborne from January 25 to January 27.
Mum Vicky Evans said she was stoked.
“I’ve just dropped her off at the airport,” Ms Evans said to the Bay Post/Moruya Examiner on Wednesday, January 23.
“She’s been over and competed in Germany, but this is her first time as part of a team.
“I’m stoked, she’s great.
“She’s really excited, and it’s great she’s going over independently as part of the team – it’s a big experience."
Lucy said her proudest achievement to date was winning and placing at the Sydney Royal Show in 2018, on horse Viva Joy.
She is currently jumping heights of 1.45 metres in competition, in open events as well as youth events.
Although she started riding at age three, she didn’t discover her love of showjumping until age eight.
“I got a pony called Charlie Brown – it was on him I discovered my love for showjumping ... which I have been focused on ever since,” she said.
The New Zealnd competition is a borrowed-horse event, which requires athletes to compete on allocated horses.
“They’re given a horse when they get there and they compete on that horse for the three days,” Ms Evans said.
“We’re hoping on Thursday they will get to look at the horses and get some history, then try and match them to our team.”
