Merimbula Marine Rescue were called to an overturned boat off Mogareeka just before 9am on Monday, January 21.
The four people on board had been assisted by crew from another passing vessel and helped back to the Kianinny boat ramp where they were met and assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
Merimbula Marine Rescue volunteers Fay Cousin, Alan Grange, Stewart Dietrich and Trish Moxon arrived on scene to attempt to tow the sinking vessel back to shore.
“It was low in the water and could be a real hazard to others,” Ms Cousin said.
Ms Cousin said they initially thought to tow the boat to Kianinny, but as it was determined it could not be safely righted and not knowing what was trailing underneath the capsized vessel, they decided the better course of action would be to take it to the beach near the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club.
While the surf club provided assistance of where to bring it in, Ms Cousin said they could not bring the boat completely in to the shore as it was sinking too low.
“When our cable cut again, we made the decision to let it go,” she said.
The sunken boat was left just beyond the breakers out from the surf club and it was hoped the boat would eventually wash ashore with help from SLSC members.
Ms Cousin said she thought the boat may have taken on water due to the bungs not being placed correctly.
