Candelo Show Society president David Heffernan, who has been involved in the shows since he was 17, said he was “over the moon” about how the 132nd event went on Sunday.
“You need the community support and you need people to do the entries to make the pavilion look great,” he said.
“I respect the great job the committee has done and all the volunteers also did a tremendous job.
“But you need the people that bring the animals along - the horses, the cows, the poultry - and if you don’t have them then it doesn’t work.”
He said in their planning the society does not commercialise the show. Mr Heffernan said some of the highlights for the crowd was the dog high jump and the interview with House Rules winners Toad Heffernan and Mandy Stone which gave members of the public the chance to ask the two television stars questions.
Chief steward John Coman said there were 1450 entries in the show’s pavilion submitted by over 220 entrants, which was up on last year’s numbers.
“There’s a lot of children’s handicrafts which really reflects well on the community,” he said.
Over in the poultry shed, there were 95 entries being judged by Terry Smith, who said there were a “lot of good birds”. While he believed numbers were up from last year he said it was becoming more difficult to engage youths to get them involved in poultry.
He encouraged more people to buy pure bred fowls instead of hybrids, as while hybrids were bred for improved egg production he said there were still species of pure breeds that also were good layers.
One teenager who enjoyed raising poultry was 14-year-old Abbey Grant of Myrtle Mountain, who won champion softfeather on the day.
“I have a soft spot for them. They’re a bit annoying, but I love them,” she said.
“Sometimes you get a rough start when they don’t cooperate, but it’s really fun.”
