More than 50 people gathered to get a glimpse of the new additions to the hospital’s accommodation facility which had opened its doors to showcase to the public.
Members of the community, senator Jim Molan and member for Bega Andrew Constance were humbled by the efforts of everyone who was involved, and were pleased to see stage two of the development complete.
“The government has built 90 hospitals around the state, and nowhere can I point to in terms of the community rallying together to build their own community carers accommodation,” Mr Constance said.
“It is phenomenal, this has been the best of the community for the community.
“There have been incredible volunteers over a six year period who have lobbied government for grants and brought out the best of the service clubs and corporate sponsors such as Bega Cheese to deliver a fantastic outcome,” he said.
The facility is now available to accommodate loved ones of those who have been admitted to hospital, the motel-style rooms are available for bookings through the hospital reception.
“Families from the Monaro, Batemans Bay to Mallacoota are all going to benefit, a massive thank you to Lynne Koerbin and the committee for being the key drivers of this project,” Mr Constance said.
CCASE president Lynne Koerbin said, “a leader is only as good as the team behind them”.
“It has been six years in the making and people are still on the committee, there has been so much dedication especially from Charlie Blomfield,” she said.
Members of the community toured through the new rooms and common area of the accommodation which remained open for the afternoon.
“It is all operational and ready to roll, we will now work towards promotional material for Mallacoota and up the coast so doctors can refer people to stay here,” Ms Koerbin said.
