From February 14, Eurobodalla Council said staff and sub-contractors will work seven days a week to ensure necessary improvements to the main runway and tie-in to the shorter east-west runway are finished as quickly as possible.
Airport businesses have been notified and all Rex Airlines flights have been cancelled between February 14 and March 6 inclusive.
A spokeswoman for Regional Express (Rex) which flies into Moruya and Merimbula said there would be some “minor scheduling adjustments to Merimbula services during the closure of Moruya Airport to accommodate the bypassing of Moruya”.
“The adjustments will have no impact on the arrival and departure times in Sydney,” the spokeswoman said.
A spokesman for Bega Valley Shire Council said that the evening flight from Sydney would arrive in Merimbula slightly earlier and the morning flight to Sydney would depart a little later.
He advised passengers to check with Rex.
“Rex will permit customers to amend travel dates to outside of the Moruya airport closure period, permit affected Moruya customers to transfer to Merimbula flights at no cost, or provide a full refund. Customers can contact 13 17 13 for assistance with any of these options,” the Rex spokeswoman said.
The work at Moruya Airport has been scheduled to allow the 2019 Australian National Skydiving Championships, hosted by Skydive Oz, to take place from March 11 to 18.
The short runway used by Skydive Oz reopens on Monday, March 4, a week before the event begins, or sooner should the work finish early and it is safe to do so, Eurobodalla Council said.
“This is a major undertaking requiring almost 20,000 tonnes of high quality gravel to be imported. The work is being done in the summer months to take advantage of the longer daylight hours and better drying conditions,” Eurobodalla Council said.
The upgrade is a part of a $9.6 million redevelopment of the airport precinct.
