Sunday’s assault on the Don O’Connell Trophy saw a small local contingent tackling a lumpy ocean. Good conditions with the current at about 20 degrees plus bait and bird activity but no reels turned by Merimbula members. However a very respectable 70kg yellowfin tuna was boated nearby by an Eden angler proving the quality of local fish.

With the return of the warmer currents ocean flathead have sparked up with bag limit catches (10 per person) reported from off Kianinny and Tura Beach. There are lots of bait fish (slimy mackerel) but also local swarms of chinamen leatherjackets so unfortunately it is not all plain sailing. Snapper are also back on the chew at our local reefs with good catches reported from the Haycock area and south to Lennards. Try micro jigs. Morwong have remained on the bite and respond to bait and soft plastics. As the moon fills, gummy sharks are expected to be back on the bite, they need patience and a well placed berley bomb.
Kingfish have been prowling both our local wharfs; Tathra and Merimbula. Most hook-ups have been at Tathra with some magnificent fish landed. At Merimbula some enormous calamari squid have been landed but it takes patience and effort to achieve good results. With prawns running try a look-alike jig. Luderick are back on the bite and double hook-ups possible on artificial weed lures. Of interest was the presence of a numbfish at the wharf. Although widespread, electric rays of this sort are fairly uncommon. Australian salmon remain patchy on both the headlands and beaches.
Not a lot of prawns have been reported so let’s see what the next new moon brings. Fish in the Merimbula Lake are on the chew! Dusky flathead, bream, trevally and whiting are all available, try Strike Pro Cyber Vibes 6.6gm. Some very large jewfish have been sighted near the channel in the Merimbula Top Lake. At the Marina there are trevally, bream and whiting. Although closed the Bega River continues to provide plentiful dusky flathead and bream and continues to fish well for whiting over the flats at Mogareeka.
