Over this coming weekend, December 8-9, to coincide with the first summer Southern Zone NSWGFA weekend, the club is running its inaugural Don O’Connell Trophy game fishing competition. 

It looks like being a great start to the season and all game anglers are welcome.

Warmer currents have arrived inshore reaching 18 degrees with an increase in sand and reef activity. 

However anglers off Merimbula have worked hard to land sizeable flathead. 

The better fish seem to be further north from Bournda Island where there are also lots of bait fish. 

Snapper and morwong can be targeted along our local reefs and respond to bait and soft plastics. 

Best results from anchoring and presenting a berley trail.

At the Merimbula Wharf large squid remain the order of the day – especially just after dark. 

Australian salmon are also active; mornings and evenings are the best time to hook up, metal spinners and hard body plastics both work well. 

The first real run of luderick for the season took place on December 1.  Perhaps these fish are using our calendar to know the start of summer? 

At the Tathra wharf kingfish remain and some large fish have been landed. 

Check the run out tides as the moon wanes for the best time to prawn after dark. 

Some have run already and this means that prawn-like squid jigs are the go. 

Tailor are active in the estuaries early morning and evening. 

Notwithstanding recent rains the Bega River has closed again.  This means fish will come downstream to be closer to the sea and so Mogareeka is the go. 

Metal vibe jigs, soft plastics and bait are all effective. Bream should frequent the rock wall area just up from the launching ramp. 

Dusky flathead and whiting are plentiful over the flats.  

The club’s Christmas party will be held on Friday, December 7, at the club rooms in Spencer Park at 6.30pm.
