A celebration for International Day of People with Disability was held in Bega on Monday to highlight the inclusive nature of the Bega Valley community.
“What it’s all about is to promote inclusion of people with disability into our regular community,” The Disability Trust’s manager for NDIS services Peter Harvey said.
“To do that we need to recognise the strengths of people with disability, recognise their achievements and work out ways to use community groups to make that inclusion happen.”
This was being done at the event by different groups running activities that supported people with disability.
For instance, Mr Harvey said Fling Physical Theatre ran an all-abilities dance class. Also, State Emergency Service was present, which promoted inclusion of people with disability through its membership.
“One of the strengths of our community is people with disability are known by the community. That’s a great strength to build on and work with,” he said.
