It was a perfect day for sailing on Saturday, when a dozen boats took to Wallagoot Lake to race two pointsore races.
A mild early breeze built to a solid 12 knots by mid-afternoon providing idyllic conditions to challenge the fleet.
Sailors said the wind was hard to gauge and was a little bit patchy in some areas, but it just added to the task on Saturday.
Organisers said the conditions can actually create a wonderful strategic situation on how best to handle the particular sections of any course.
A slightly better line, creating space to get fresh open air and tacking can all be done very strategically to drastically alter the finish time of any given race.
Racers said there were varying patches of the wind and it was hard to gauge from the relative shelter of the clubhouse and launching beach over the weekend.
Despite the tricky conditions, the club congratulated Rob and Sian Morton who won both races to maintain a perfect scorecard for the season so far in their MG14 – Wizard of Oz.
The duo were tearing up the course, but were hotly pursued by the father son combination of Josh and Jarrah Dorrough who gave them a good run.
The Dorroughs had a great run early leading the Morton’s around the first mark in race one, and finishing with nine seconds on corrected time after the 40 minute race, in race two.
Goete Vikstrom scored third in race one, while Neil Fisher claimed the honour in race two.
Defending multihull champ Terry Ubrihien almost won both races, but capsized in sight of the finish line in race two, which let the Weta trimaran of Dennis Stanton win that race.
Organisers said they were pleased with the turnout that also featured a bigger keel boat “Just add water” for a run with the fleet of dinghies on Saturday.
Five of the sailors head to the Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club Regatta, which promises to be a fun and interesting challenge.
The Jindabyne regatta will run for three days from Friday.
Saturday will see a pair of handicap start races on Wallagoot Lake.
Free sailing lessons are available to new members each Saturday before the club races.
