“It’s the only one of its kind in the shire”, a delighted Tania Lingard said. “We have been wanting this since the opening of the skate park in 2012. It was always our vision to have a BMX track here as well.”
Earlier this year the skate club re-formed, determined to see the project through.
“We were aware of the growing numbers of young families in Cobargo and so we approached the council, and received their permission to proceed,” Ms Lingard said.
“From there, John Turville [BVSC recreation and natural assets coordinator] contacted designer Yully Arnold of Creative Lines in Pambula to design the park.
“The design was just about complete when fill started to move through town from the Dignams Creek roadworks to the showground. We immediately contacted Andrew Destry from the RMS and soon dirt was arriving by the truck load.”
“One of our club members, John Burgess, who has had years of experience in the earth-moving industry, took on the role of foreman on the job. John and Danielle Burgess worked tirelessly every day for over three weeks directing the trucks bringing fill, following the design to shape the track, with the contractors Stu Longhurst on his bobcat and Steve Neilson with his bulldozer.”
Saturday’s grand opening was also a fundraiser for the next part of the recreation area for young people – a full sized basketball court!
