Pupils at Monash Primary School in the ACT decided they wanted to write letters to drought affected areas after reading the Jackie French book Drought in class.

Bega CWA was the recipient of four of these letters as well as drawings from the pupils, several of whom are on the autism spectrum.

As well as the letters, the children also raised $1400 for Buy a Bale. 

“The kids wanted to let people know they were thinking about them, they wanted to be a part of it,” member of the CWA Helen Galton said. 

“And I must say when we got the letters and handed them to people who live on farms it was a pretty emotional moment.”

One of the letters, written by Phoenix, reads: “Dear farmers, I feel sad about the drought. I hope everything is good. I want it to rain soon. I want food for your animals.”

Another, by Aidan, reads: “I’m sorry that there is a drought in your area. I wish that you get rain. I am worried that all your crops are dying so I assure you that 50 trucks are coming to help.”

Considering the mental and physical effort these young children put into writing these heartwarming letters, it was “quite emotional” Jenny Foster Crome said.

“To think these little ones have written that – it would be very hard for them to do – when you read that you can really feel what they’re thinking,” she said.

Christine Skeen and her mother who lives on a farm said the letter she received “brought tears to her eyes”.

The CWA women wanted to share these lovely letters with the rest of the Bega Valley Shire to spread the joy and positive thoughts of the children of Monash Primary School.
