The fish are in excellent condition with the largest taken last weekend a great 76kg. Together with the season’s whale migration down to Antarctica for summer, now is a great time for offshore anglers.
Good flathead remain available at Tura Headland and south-east of Turingal Headland. Try 15-20 fathoms. Snapper and morwong are available off Long Point and White Rock as well as Lennards, North Head and Boyds Tower.
Snapper and morwong respond to pilchard and squid baits as well as soft plastics and metal micro jigs.
At the Merimbula wharf the annual luderick run has started and good fish have already been landed using artificial weed flies. Calamari squid remain patchy at the wharf together with cuttlefish and octopus. Club members have reported their best results came from jigging at dusk.
The estuaries are fishing well for tailor; try slow trolling in the channels. There are plentiful trevally and dusky flathead. Bream are a little shy and some fine whiting have also been recorded from the sand flats. Metal vibe jigs, soft plastics and bait are all effective. When using bait, berley certainly helps.
For the observant, a pair of dolphins are patrolling the Merimbula back lake. Good salmon are reported at Pambula in the channel between the “Shark Hole” and Broadwater. Pambula also sports lots of mullet which are best attached with bread berley and will take prawn bait.
The club’s annual Tackle World Tri Estuary Challenge last weekend was a great success with abundant estuary fish “caught and released“ from all three major local estuaries; the Bega River, Merimbula Lake and Pambula Lake. Seniors recorded all species: bream, dusky flathead, whiting, trevally, tailor, luderick and salmon but no jewfish.
A standout dusky flathead of 84.6cm was taken by David Hay, a 43.9cm whiting by Ian Neilson and a 49.5cm tailor by Harley Jenkins. Standout junior with four species; bream, dusky flathead, whiting and luderick was Oscar Weingarth. Congratulations to Sam Dixon for a 41cm trevally and Kade Jenkins for his 43cm tailor.
