Construction of the $90,000 park near the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club has been completed and it was officially opened on Tuesday.
“I think groups will be using it all the time,” Tathra Lions Club member Paul Falvey said.
“It’s open to the public, it’s free. The closest gymnasium is actually in Bega.”
The majority of funding for the project came from the Tathra Lions through their fundraising, such as catering at Kalaru races, their popular pig races, a Calcutta for the Melbourne Cup as well as a range of barbecue events – and they began raising money for the park at the start of 2017.
Mr Falvey said the idea for the project began when members of the Lions club travelled to other regions and saw different types of exercise equipment.
The park in Tathra includes such equipment as chin up bars, push up bars, step ups, cycle bike, chest press, leg press, body twist and elliptical cycle while the surface is made up of wet pore rubber.
“Generally, lifestyles have become more sedentary now and people are looking for things to do in a shorter period of time,” Mr Falvey said.
“This is something people can do in their free time.
“They can build exercise into something that suits their own program.”
He said the location of the park, near the beach and the planned inclusive playground, would mean many would use it.
“It adds an extra thing to this magnificent area that’s so well used by Tathra people and visitors as well,” he said.
Noel O’Reilly of Tathra was among to first to use the park on Tuesday.
“What a great Lions club and what a wonderful project,” he said.
The park was also assisted by a $20,000 NSW government Community Building Partnership Program grant and Bega Valley Shire Council who acted as project managers and paid for the excavation and preparations of the site.
