A large tree on the western side of the highway fell across the road, crushing the guard rail on the opposite side.
Bega driver Matt McGovern was hauling cars north and swerved to avoid the main trunk of the tree.
He finished with his cabin perched precariously over the bank of the creek and was lucky to escape serious injury.
Batemans Bay police said a call was received approximately 4am and that upon arrival the 40-year-old driver was conscious and breathing, with a sore leg, but did not sustain serious injuries..
Fire and Rescue crews from the Far South Coast arrived about 4.30am on Thursday and worked into the evening to prevent the fuel reaching Brou Lake.
They resumed on Friday morning and hoped to complete the task that day.
Dave Clapson of D&A Excavations, Bodalla, spent several hours on Thursday, lifting more than 30 tonnes of potentially contaminated soil from the bank of Whittakers Creek after the diesel spill.
“We have taken out some of the mud we think was contaminated, that was actually in the creek, and a bit of the bank, and some of the top soil in the road verge,” he said.
“They are being pretty thorough about it all.”
Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue team leader Phil Eberle praised all authorities involved in the cleanup.
