The club recently purchased an automatic external defibrillator worth $2200 and on Friday installed it in the Cobargo Post Office, where a nurse also carried out a public demonstration on how to use it in order to let the community know it was there.
“It’s very simple to use,” the Lions Club’s secretary–treasurer Cliff Tarrant said.
“You just open it up basically, and then it starts talking to you.
“It tells you in great detail what to do.”
He said the idea to install the device in the town came from a local district nurse.
“She said there was no facility like that in Cobargo at all, there’s no ambulance station or anything,” he said.
The battery on the defibrillator lasts for about seven years and can be used 15 times.
Mr Tarrant said next year the club will look at their funds and consider doing more fundraising to buy another defibrillator for Quaama.
“We’ve been investigating and there’s one at the ambulance station in Bermagui but not one publicly available so we might look into that next year too,” he said.
