The annual Men of League charity bowls day raised more than $500 through raffles, while other funds came in through novelty fines on the bowling greens and donations. 

The funds are used to support, men, women and children involved in rugby league, who might have fallen on hard times, Far South Coast branch president Col Clarke says. 

“It’s not just us blokes,” Clarke said, “but the women and children of the rugby league community as well if they fall on hard times.”

“It’s up to us that take on these official positions to spread the message and take on that duty of care to everyone in our community.”

Mr Clarke said he was delighted to welcome a roll-up of about 50 at Club Bega, a slight increase on last year’s number.

He and other officials said it was particularly pleasing to see some of the younger generation getting involved with two teams from the current Roosters playing crop. 

Mr Clarke heaped praise on Hedley Lucas and Peter Turner who coordinated the day, sold raffle tickets and cooked up a barbecue lunch, while the masses enjoyed three-bowl triples. 

Skills varied widely on the bowling green from some pennant bowlers and club champions down to genuine first-timers, but it was fun for all in flawless conditions. 

Mr Clarke said it was great to see the strong turnout enjoying the day as one of the major functions of the Men of League is to help battle depression and provide social outlets for everyone in the community. 

“It’s all about fighting the ‘black dog’,” he said, adding that the group were avid supporters of the R U Ok movement and were passionate about making sure people are being looked after.

He said most people would know someone who had been affected by depression or anxiety and it was rewarding to help in any small way. 

Mr Lucas was grateful to everyone who bought raffle tickets and took part on the day. 

He also thanked the local businesses who donated to the group including Betta Electrical, The Tathra Beach Bowling Club, Club Bega, Grand Hotel, the Bega Men’s Bowling Club and NRL Development. 

The group are now preparing for their second major fundraiser of the year – the annual golf day – to be held on November 25.

It’s a four-player ambrose format at the at Eden golf course and everyone is welcome. 

“It’s a fantastic fun day and you don’t need a handicap to join in,” Mr Clarke said.
