With sea temperatures a little cool (15 degrees) best try for ocean flathead at 18-20 fathoms.  All along from Tura Headland past Bournda Island to SE of Turingal Headland. Off Kianinny and to the north off Boronda headland, try 15 fathoms out to 20 fathoms.  Also try off White Rock and the Tathra Hotel.

Best areas for snapper and morwong are between 15 and 20 fathoms off Long Point and White Rock as well as Lennards, North Head and Boyds Tower.  Snapper and morwong respond to pilchard and squid baits as well as soft plastics and metal micro jigs. 

Some excellent calamari squid have been taken after dark at the Merimbula Wharf.  Best results using a slow sinking squid jig let down to the weed tops.

Congratulations to club member Herb Betar using a soft plastic lure who captured and released a magnificent 91cm dusky flathead at Mogareeka just up-river from the launching ramp.

Relatively large tailor remain abundant in the lakes and Bega River.  These are best caught with metal spinners as they delight in destroying soft plastic lures.  A dolphin seen cruising the Merimbula Lake may well be feeding on the tailor. 

In the estuaries soft plastics are great for trevally, bream and dusky flathead.  Some lovely bream and estuary perch are reported from Wonboyn.  Small leatherjackets remain prolific in the Merimbula Lake competing with the trevally and bream.

The club’s next event is the very popular Tackle World Tri-Estuary Challenge which has a prize pool of some $7000 for more than 40 prizes so there is virtually something for everyone.  To be held over the weekend of November 10-11, this event is open to all anglers with free entry for children. 

The challenge is catch and release only with fish length photographed on a DPI “brag mat”.  The fishing areas are the Bega River, Merimbula and Merimbula Back Lakes and Pambula Lake.  Entry finalised at the briefing on November 9 at the clubhouse in Spencer Park. 

The club will be open on Friday at 6.30pm and visitors are very welcome. In fact on Friday, November 2, the club will be holding a free sausage sizzle and family night plus an exciting raffle, everyone is invited!
