Murray Deakin, 20, appeared in Bega Local Court on Tuesday, charged with two counts of murder and another of wounding with intent to murder, as well as several additional charges relating to a police pursuit and carjacking.
All charges relate to a night of violence in Bega and surrounds on the night of June 1, when Deakin is alleged to have stabbed his grandparents at their home in East Street, Bega.
Gail Winner, 69, died at the South East Regional Hospital while her husband Thomas, 71, required significant treatment and recovery time in Canberra Hospital.
Following the alleged stabbing, a manhunt and subsequent police pursuit saw Deakin allegedly cross paths with former police officer Mick Horne, 54, on Sapphire Coast Dr near Bournda.
He was allegedly attacked with a hammer during a carjacking and died as a result of his wounds in St Georges Hospital two days later.
On Tuesday, October 23, the two murder charges and one of wounding with intent were adjourned to December 11 in Bega, with a case conference scheduled for the week prior to discuss a possible plea.
A second charge of wounding with intent was dropped by police.
While Deakin expressed he was “sorry” during a brief hearing at Batemans Bay Court in the days following the incident, he is yet to enter a plea to any of the charges.
