Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant presented the club with a 2018 NSW Get Ready Community Award and the Resilient Australia Award during a special ceremony at Parliament House in Sydney on Tuesday.
Mr Grant said while our emergency services do a tremendous job preparing and protecting the community, their efforts are often bolstered by unsung local heroes across NSW communities.
“Volunteers and agencies worked tirelessly at the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club following the blaze to provide crucial information, support and emergency items to the community,” Mr Grant said.
“This community survived horrendous events, but under the worst of circumstances showed us the best of what locals can achieve when they support one another.”
The awards help highlight significant community-led disaster preparedness and response initiatives across the state, and aim to inspire communities to strengthen their capabilities so they may withstand and recover from natural disasters into the future.
Bega MP Andrew Constance said the Tathra community had taken the challenge of recovery from a natural disaster to a whole new level since the devastating fires earlier this year.
“I’m so humbled to represent this amazing community, and proud of our surf life saving club for what they did to help people get back on their feet so quickly,” Mr Constance said.
“The people of Tathra really pulled together in what were some very tough times, and the men and women at the club clearly showed that nothing beats local knowledge when it comes to responding to disasters.
“They are a reflection of what’s great about our local communities; mates supporting mates in times of trouble. I congratulate and thank them again for everything they have done.”
