The whale season is progressing well and most days see pods of whales frolicking their way southwards for their summer in Antarctica. Large schools of dolphins are often seen accompanying the whales.

With improving conditions we are pleased to report good catches of snapper and morwong off our local reefs. Try Horseshoe reef at 25 fathoms. Snapper and morwong are also on the chew at Boyd’s Tower, Lennards, and Haycock reefs.
Flathead are becoming more prolific with catches from off Long Point to north of Tathra. Try off Tura Headland at 20-25 fathoms. Salmon remain patchy. Best areas for salmon are Aslings Beach near Eden, Main Beach at Merimbula and for some very large fish; North Tura near Bournda Island.
Water temperatures are slowly rising and we have seen mullet moving into Merimbula Lake. There is already some dusky flathead activity at Mogareeka. Good tailor are schooling all through the estuaries including Merimbula Lake and on Main Beach. Best time for tailor in the estuaries and beaches is early morning or evening. Try spinning with metal lures.
Merimbula Lake has returned a few dusky flathead, best using soft plastics. Bream and estuary perch remain active further up the Bega River. Soft plastics, hard bodies and peeled prawns remain the best baits.
The Merimbula fishing platform is alive with yellowtail, jack mackerel (cowan young) and a few slimy mackerel. Berley is a must to bring the bait fish onto the bite. Calamari squid are falling to those with patience using prawn colored jigs.
The Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club will be hosting its annual seafood dinner on Saturday, September 22. The club invites members and guests for a great night of fine seafood and drinks. This year we are taking the pressure off club members and getting a caterer in to assist in preparation and presentation.
Along with the traditional platter of prawns and oysters, your taste buds will be tempted by a starter of hors d'oeuvres followed by a rich seafood chowder, then three other seafood courses closing with a cleansing (non seafood!) dessert. Bar and raffles will help keep us entertained whilst we enjoy one another's company at this very popular annual event. Space and catering constraints force us to limit to 70 max so get in early with you booking.
The club is open every Friday from 6.30pm. Visitors are very welcome. Come and enjoy the fishing report, the ambience, friendship and lovely views with very competitive bar prices. All inquires to Lindon Thompson on 0411 873 880.
