Nearly 1000 young Scouts and Guides, aged eight-18 years from the ACT, NSW and Victoria participated in a series of hands-on engineering workshops, building straw towers, geodesic domes and mousetrap racers and an expo full of engineering inspiration as part of the annual ACT SciScouts program.
Wanting to make a weekend of their trip to Canberra, the Cobargo Scout Group arranged an IKEA Engineering Challenge.
They joined with scouting friends from across the region in a modern-day orienteering and construction challenge.
Scouts were required to navigate their way around the giant IKEA store, locate a specified item of furniture and then construct it in small groups.
The finished items were then donated to the Salvos.
Cobargo Scout leader Graham Parr described the weekend as “fantastic”.
“This just goes to show that Scouting is more than knots and tents,” Mr Parr said.
“Our leaders work hard to create a whole range of fun activities for Scouts.
“We even managed to go ice skating and attend the Australian War Memorial Last Post ceremony commemorating the 52nd anniversary of the Battle or Long Tan”.
