“It’s a really lovely recognition of the importance of including regional audiences and regional arts professionals in that contemporary art conversation,” he said.
“It’s a recognition of how regional art communities are part of that larger world.
“We do tend to get left out of the conversations sometimes.”
Mr Dawson will spend two weeks at one of the world’s newest major art institutions, Museum MACAN in Jakarta, Indonesia.
“Throughout my career I have been drawn to contemporary South East Asian practice and in particular the artists thriving in creative communities from our closest neighbour Indonesia,” he said.
“In 2017 I attended Art Jogja in Jogjakarta, held annually at the Jogja National Museum, as well as visiting Indonesian/Australian artist Jumaadi’s studio, who will exhibit at the BVRG as part of our summer exhibition this year.”
With the proposed BVRG redevelopment potentially on the horizon, the fellowship will provide Mr Dawson with an insight into the design and functioning of a world-class gallery facility, which he hopes will benefit the project should the application to the NSW government’s Regional Cultural Fund be successful.
