The Giants had trouble finishing their opportunities, while handovers meant the firebirds were able to creep ahead.
Pettitt started out of GS, but was later moved into GA where her versatility paid dividends in helping keep the Giants in the contest.
It was an intense second quarter, with both teams displaying fierce determination and playing with passion. GIANTS continued to try to get the advantage but were unable to find ground against a surging Firebirds. Turnovers on both sides led to several missed opportunities and goals were hard to come by early on.
Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald made some changes at the time out with Pettitt and Jo Harten swapping bibs in the circle. At first this seemed to work as GIANTS closed the gap in the score, but a strategic Firebirds time out with just under three minutes left allowed them to surge ahead again 30-22.
Pettitt returned to the court shortly into the third and made an immediate impact, sinking three goals in a row, but the firebirds continued to wrestle control in the middle.

The Giants will hope to bounce back against the Melbourne Vixens on July 22 at Hisense Arena.
