The Bermagui community rallied together with a fantastic effort to raise $5000 for the Tathra Mayoral Appeal Fund and Bermagui RFS on Saturday, July 8.

Fran Trenerry of Bermagui Cellars said the idea of throwing a fundraiser for local firies sparked from an abundance of stock that suppliers had donated at the time of the Tathra bushfires in April.

“The initial call to our suppliers after the fires, they provided us with $3,200 work of stock,” she said.

“From there they just kept on giving, they have been so generous.”

Ms Trenerry set up the bar at the Bermagui Surfclub with $4000 worth of donated stock, food and equipment for a fun night of activities was also supplied by the local community to help support the cause.

The night raised over $5000 which has been shared between Tathra mayoral fund and Bermagui RFS.

“RFS are all volunteers and do so much for the community, what we wanted was to put a face to it and get them out there,” Ms Trenerry said

Overall, the night was a great success. Bringing the community back together at the Bermagui surf club which acted as an evacuation centre during the Tathra fire devastation.

The night was all about friends and family coming together to support local firefighters. Kids participated in a colouring-in competition and a handball competition. There was live music by Daisy Boyle and a scrumptious raffle prize announced on the night.

Bermagui RFS set up an awareness campaign outside, demonstrating how to extinguish a kitchen stove on fire using a fire blanket.

“A lot of people think water can put out a fire, but when there is oil involved water is the worst thing to use,” RFS member Phil Baldwin said.

Ms Trenerry was pleased to hear the Bermagui RFS are recruiting five new members.

“It was a beautiful warm and fuzzy feeling at the end of it. There were five new recruits on the night,” she said.
