“The best gift you can give anybody is to find a way to be happy yourself,” he said.
“If you really, really, really love yourself, you will never harm nobody.”
With a name coming from the Biblical figure who received the 10 Commandments, Moses mixes rhythms from across the globe including African, reggae, funk and pop, and there is a spiritual element to his music.
His decision to embrace the world and everyone in it was sparked a long time ago, as he can remember asking himself what sort of person he would be when he was only three years old.
“When you are born on this planet, first you have to search for yourself,” Moses said.
“I used to be in a prison because I used to be angry.
“I am so happy that I found myself. Many years ago I used to fear.”
Love is the most important thing to teach, he said, because if you love then you will never fear anybody.
“So that’s what I want to share with my music,” he said.
Everything about my music is love, happiness, joy; that is all.
- Afro Moses
Moses was raised in a small village in his West African home country, before running away to the city of Takoradi where he lived with his uncle.
Now based in Taree, he does return to Ghana but he said music has changed there since he grew up, and now there are “new talented musicians” who “want to make the world a better place”.
“The world is getting better,” Moses said.
“Many years ago I wouldn’t have been able to stand on a white stage. But look at Michael Jackson and what he did, look at Stevie Wonder.
“People are doing great things.”
While Moses may have found his path, he said he cannot help anyone else on their own journeys as it something people have to learn by themselves – although he did say experience was the best teacher.
What he can offer people is the love that is expressed through his music.
“Everything about my music is love, happiness, joy; that is all,” he said.
Afro Moses will perform at Tathra Hotel, Tathra on Sunday, July 15 from 4pm along with his band Moses O'Jah.
Entry is free.
