Traditionally Broadbill were fished during darkness when they rose from the deep canyons to feed near surface. Now that the “secret” of daylight Broadbill capture has been publicised and NSWGFA has allowed the use of braid, anglers can fish during daylight probing the depths with fluoro lit squid baits.

The Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club’s 26th Broadbill swordfish and sixth Southern Bluefin tournament starts Friday.
Members of NSWGFA, GFAA and ANSA clubs can all compete with briefing scheduled for 7pm on Thursday at MBGLAC’s Spencer Park club rooms in Merimbula.
The event runs over two weekends from 7pm on Friday until 7am on Monday, on the 6-9 and 13-16 of July.
Boats may leave from their own Ports, but must abide by the fishing boundaries which are due east of Goalen Head at 360 33”S and due east of the Southern end of Disaster Bay to the south at 370 19”S.
In regular fishing news, Chinamen leatherjacket are moving southwards past White Rock near Kianinny and it is quite a battle to get a rig to the bottom.
Good flathead are on the chew but it is a costly battle. Snapper and morwong are about the local reefs, all the way from White Rock to North Head off Eden.
Salmon have become patchy off the beaches. Try Tura, Main and Haycock Beaches as well as Tura and Short Point Headlands. Salmon are attracted to pilchards.
The Merimbula Back Lake has cooled considerably to about 12 degrees and dusky flathead have really slowed down. In the front lake the run-in from the sea is about five degrees warmer and a great time for trevally and bream over the shallows on the last part of the tide. Keep in mind the deeper channels stay cool. Reports from the Bega River, which has closed again, include some large whiting along the shallows. Best results when the wind ruffles the surface.
Soft plastics give good results for bream along the rock wall up-river from the launching ramp. At Pambula; trevally, bream, tailor and good size mullet remain on the bite. Salmon are expected near the Pambula river mouth.
Calamari squid remain patchy at the Merimbula Fishing Platform making a trip worthwhile both morning and evening.
