Four BHS students who are also Falcons players, one from Eden Marine, another from Narooma High and two former Falcons who are from Jindabyne Central School have all been named in the Brumbies side set to take on schoolgirl squads from across the country this weekend.
The Brumbies announced both a Provincial and a City Schoolgirls team to compete at the Inaugural Schoolgirls Invitational Tournament to be held at the Australian Institute of Sport this coming weekend.
It’s the first time a 15-a-side competition of this type has been organised for under 18 female representative players.
As well as the two from Canberra, schoolgirl rugby squads will contest the invitational tournament from NSW Country, Sydney South West, Melbourne Rebels, Western Force, South Australia and Tasmania.
Playing for Brumbies Provincial will be Holly Christison, Sisilia Ragatu, Molly Carr, Brianna Davis-Lonesborough (BHS), Isabella Kiely (Eden), Eleni Ives (Narooma), and Rhianna and Kirra Burke (Jindabyne).
In addition, Falcon Kayla Crocker (Jindabyne) is playing for the South Australian side, jumping at the chance to make up numbers there.
Falcons head coach, and coach of the Brumbies Provincial side, Scott Harris was really pleased with the selections of his girls, current and former.
Even more so as he is also a teacher at Bega High, where many of the Falcons attend school and from where four of the reps were chosen.
He said this was fantastic recognition for the girls, not just because the Under 17s won last year’s ACT and Southern NSW 10-a-side premiership, but for their ongoing commitment to the game.
“They all played really well last year and some have attended Brumbies camps in the past – they’ve just kicked on from there which is very pleasing,” he said.
“They’ve put the hard work in and get stuck in at training every week. This is great recognition for what they do.”
Mr Harris said the selections were also really pleasing from Bega High School’s point of view.
“I was just having a laugh with one of the girls earlier about how she’s gone from being a bit of a mischief maker to committing to her sport and becoming more of a role model to other girls here,” he said.
The Falcons reps all head out on Friday for the invitational tournament at the AIS. Games will be played all Saturday before finals on Sunday.
Mr Harris said on Monday the Brumbies will select their schoolgirl side to go into camp for six weeks ahead of a competition game against NSW.
“And this is all on top of club commitments and school, they will be busy but they put a lot of work in.”
