Students from Bega High School have organised a rally on the morning of Friday, June 22 to support the victims of bullying and harassment.
It comes in the wake of a bashing at the school that was filmed and uploaded to social media on Tuesday, where a student can be seen throwing her victim into a brick wall before punching and kicking her as she lies curled up on the ground.
One of the organisers of the rally, Tazmin Bay of Year 12, said it was to going to be held because students’ concerns needed to be heard.
“We all have a voice, the same voice but sometimes people don’t listen,” she said.
“[Friday] is us rallying together to discuss how we can make our school better and show others that Bega High does not stand for this kind of behaviour.”
While the video of the bashing this week has been widely shared and garnered plenty of national media attention, she said there is just as much bullying at Bega High as any other school.
“It’s just sad that the incident that happened was that extreme, but it happens all the time all over the place and we as a group of students just want to take a stand together and try be heard that we want it to change,” Tazmin said.
Bega Police report a 13-year-old girl has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and intimidation over the incident at the school earlier this week.
She was given conditional bail and will appear in Bega Children’s Court in July.
