Bega Cheese executive chairman Barry Irvin presented Tulgeen CEO Jen Russell, and board director John Stylianou with a cheque for $100,000 on Monday morning, June 18.
“We always choose a local charity to support, and then invite some of our corporate clients and customers from around the world to Bega,” Mr Irvin said.
“We show them a great time around the Valley, and finish the visit with the charity auction in aid of the causes we support each year.
“We auctioned off a year’s supply of Bega Cheese as part of the event this year, which went for $40 000.”
As well as the support from their corporate clients, Bega Cheese also makes a substantial donation itself.
Ms Russell said the donation would help in assisting Tulgeen’s much needed supported accommodation services.
“Tulgeen has a long history of providing residential in-home support, and now with the NDIS in effect, there’s a huge demand for it,” she said.
“There’s a shortage of local housing for our clients, so we are really grateful for the generosity of Bega Cheese and their clients with this donation.”
In addition to supporting Tulgeen, this year the event was also held in aid of the Mayoral Appeal Fund for the bushfire recovery effort.
“We had a unique circumstance this year where we also had the bushfire appeal operating locally, so we wanted to help support that as well,” Mr Irvin said.
“Bega Cheese was a little more generous in its donation this year, because we wanted to be able to support the fire recovery effort, while still making a substantial donation to Tulgeen.”
Mr Irvin said that the fundraiser would be supporting Tulgeen again next year.
“The shortage of housing for supported accommodation is a very important issue; we want to make sure we continue to support Tulgeen with this, so next year’s event will also be in aid of them,” he said.
Other than continued support for Tulgeen, previous recipients of the annual Bega Cheese auction include the Community Carers Accommodation South East at the regional hospital, and the Youthland project at Jigamy.
