A suspended web of 64 interconnected shirts will be manipulated by performers to create a series of spaces, from architectural structures to the subconscious internal landscapes of the mind.
“This work explores our relationship to the spaces we move through and the effects they have in shaping our everyday lives and imaginative worlds,” Fling’s co-artistic director Rob McCredie said.
“A major feature of the work is an evolving set installation that creates a variety of changing spaces, that are sometimes like architectural structures and sometimes natural environments.
“The audience is literally taken on a journey through the space with some of the performers acting as tour guides.”
He said the title of the show came from wanting to create a work that questioned our relationship to the environments we live in.
“Some of these spaces we create and shape for ourselves and others are created for us through architecture in public spaces, or by nature,” he said.
“Some environments that we can’t control can feel oppressive, or induce anxiety, some spaces make us want to explore and inspire a sense of adventure, while other spaces might make us feel calm, giving us a chance to relax and reflect.”
The first development for the project took place in January last year and many collaborators contributed to it, including dance artist Holly Durant, Tracks artistic co-director Tim Newth and composer David Hewitt.
Eleven performers aged from 14 to 18 will be taking to the stage for the show.
“They are a fantastic collective of young performers, they each bring their own personality to the work and have been important collaborators in realising the work,” McCredie said.
“Rehearsals have been going well.”
Body and Environment is on June 21, 22 and 23 at 5.30pm and 7.30pm, and June 24 at 5.30pm. It will be at the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre, Bega.
Tickets are $25/$20/$15.
