“We just enjoy our dancing and every so often someone will say there’s no class for beginners,” Wendy said.
“U3A was asking for course leaders and at first we thought it might be difficult because we wouldn’t get enough men but we began to get enquiries and have 20 people enrolled,” she said.
Wendy said that she had received several calls from people who had separated from their partner or whose partner had died but she has encouraged them to come along.
She even had an elderly lady who admitted that even though she might not dance, she was so lonely that she would just like to come along and watch.
It’s not just social interaction that’s a benefit. Wendy said that learning to dance is good for the brain and the combination of music and connectivity with a partner can open up new pathways in the brain.
“It’s new vogue or sequence dancing with repetitive sequences, it’s very simple,” Wendy said.
The eight week course starts on Wednesday, June 6 at 2pm to 3.30pm although if there are many more numbers the group will be split into two for one hour sessions.
It will take place at the Uniting Church on Henwood Street, Merimbula and everyone is welcome, both singles and couples.
However Wendy stressed that it was important to register your interest so that she could prepare. Call her on 0412 997 769.
